Incubator Objectives

The “Together” incubator is the fruit of collaboration between the Swedish International Liberal Centre (SILC), and ARIJ, and is funded by the Swedish Institute (SI).

The incubator is a participant-driven project aimed to produce products/tools that help human rights defenders and journalists, particularly in Egypt and broadly across the region.

This 2-year long incubator brought together 16 committed participants from different professions: Human rights activists, journalists, investigative journalists, technical developers, designers, researchers, and fact-checkers to learn and work together.

The collaboration between the various professions offers a great opportunity to boost creativity and efficiency toward achieving goals rather than solely working within one's own profession.

CAPACITY BUILDING

TEAMWORK, IDEATION, AND EXECUTION

Mid-2021, ARIJ and its partner issued a call for interested applicants to apply to join the incubator. 182 applications were received; 131 were males and 51 females.

A committee consisting of the tow partners: SILC and ARIJ filtered and selected 16 participants from 181 applications in two stages. The team was gender-balanced, with 8 female participants.

The selected participants underwent a series of 15 training sessions, delivered by 19 trainers, 8 of whom were female.

The training covered several topics, including:

  • Innovation and Design Thinking
  • Budget Preparation and Proposal Writing
  • Script Writing for Short Videos
  • Strategic Thinking
  • Communication and Presentation Skills

At this stage, the 16 participants were divided into two groups, each forming a team and selecting a goal.

The teams were:

Platforms: Menassat:

The team's objective was to develop a website that would archive over 1,000 human rights studies on Egypt from more than 10 local and international organizations in both Arabic and English. On November 6, 2022, the website was launched simultaneously with the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27). To promote the launch of the Menassat website, a small marketing campaign was prepared and implemented through ARIJ, and other platforms and social media accounts. ARIJ organized a webinar entitled "Manassat: Egypt's Human Rights Memory (Case Study)" to commemorate the International Day of Social Justice.

The webinar highlighted the website's purpose, showcased its features, and discussed the status of human rights documentation in Egypt and the potential benefits of such projects.

Your safety Matters: Salamtak Tehemena:

The team has prepared an extensive campaign to raise awareness about the reality, challenges, pressures, and prospects of "mental health," particularly for female journalists and civil society activists in Egypt. To coincide with World Mental Health Day, they created five articles, one animated video, and four graphic videos, all in Arabic, which were widely disseminated on ARIJ, and eight other external platforms and social media accounts.

As a result of this campaign, ARIJ organized a webinar entitled "Your Safety Matters... Where to?" to further highlight the psychological pressures that females experience, their impact, and the effects they leave. The webinar featured several key speakers who approached the topic from different perspectives, engaging with a diverse audience. This event was held to coincide with Women's Day.
