About Brave Media

The Brave Media project, co-funded by the European Commission, is a global initiative to enhance the resilience of independent, public interest media in 20 countries, through innovative, locally-led solutions.

Launched in October 2024, the three-year project is led by BBC Media Action , working closely with Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ), Equal Rights and Independent Media (ERIM), International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Fondation Hirondelle, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), the Samir Kassir Foundation , SembraMedia and the World Association of News Publishers WAN-IFRA.

Journalists across the world increasingly face common challenges: political and security risks, financial pressures, rising mis- and disinformation, and a crisis of trust in media. Together, these present an existential, global threat to public interest journalism and to democracy.

The Brave Media project is working to expand the skills of individual media outlets, strengthen media sector networks, and pilot new collaborative solutions toward healthy and diverse media landscapes. The project will also work at a global policy level, to drive more effective responses from policy-makers and stakeholders – including governments, media development funders, intergovernmental agencies, and tech companies – to the urgent needs faced by independent media in the global majority.
