Secure Networking Tips and Tools

Use a VPN, the main purpose of a VPN is to hide your online activity. VPNs are often used to guard against hackers and snoops on public networks, but they're also useful for hiding your IP address, browsing activity, and personal data on any Wifi network — even at home. ARIJ recommends VPN options below:

Use strong password for you wifi

Don't use public wifi in coffee shops or work

Keep router firmware up-to-date

Use WAP2, WPA2 is a security standard for wireless networks based on the Advanced Encryption Standard technology (AES)

Avoid using the free router from your ISP

Disable WPS. WPS is horribly insecure and can be used as a means for attackers to gain access to your network. This is why we disable WPS.

Disable UPnP, UPnP doesn't use authentication or authorization (only some devices), assuming that devices trying to connect to it are trustworthy and come from your local network. This means that hackers can find backdoors to your network.
