"Made in prison" reaps Future Press Award

Egyptian journalist Mahmoud Wakea won the Future Press Award for his investigation “Made in Prison”, coached under ARIJ and published on Mada Masr’s website.

"Made in Prison" chronicled how Egyptian prisons turned into fertile soil for breeding radical jihadist ideology, as many inmates absorbed this doctrine and joined jihadist groups. The investigation tells the stories of four prisoners who converted to jihad; some of whom even went on to commit terrorist operations...

"Ergot" plagues the bread of Egyptians

Mohamed Hamid investigated how Ergot fungus in imported Russian wheat, found its way to the Egytian bread. This investigation, “‘Ergot’ to the tables of the Egyptians”, exposed how the Egyptian government — through a series of decisions since 2010— allowed the entry of wheat shipments contaminated with the toxic ergot mushrooms.

ARIJ condemns the assassination of Iraqi journalists Abdul Samad and Ghali

ARIJ condemned the assassination of Iraqi Investigative Journalist Ahmed Abdul Samad and his companion cameraman Safaa Ghali, in Basra early in January. They were shot at point blank by unidentified gunmen as they were reporting street protests against corruption and mismanagement. 

ARIJ recalled the dedication and commitment of Abdul Samad and the beginnings of his journey in investigative journalism, along with dozens of other Iraqi journalists. Abdul-Samad produced an investigation with ARIJ in March 2012 entitled: “The death highway between Umm Qasr and Basra”…

Wakea: Digital narration tools are complementary to storytelling, not a frame to tell the story

In this issue of our monthly newsletter, we host Egyptian prize winner Mahmoud Wakea. Wakea graduated in Cairo University, majoring in journalism. In a short time, Wakea managed to navigate through the most important Egyptian media institutions. He worked with Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper and satellite channels, among others. 

Wakea trained and produced a number of investigations with ARIJ on human rights and corruption. His last investigation was the prize-winner: "Made in Prison".

وكشف “صنع في السجن” كيف تحولت سجون مصرية إلى تربة خصبة لنمو الفكر الجهادي المتطرف، بعد تجنيد عدد من الموقوفين والسجناء في صفوف جماعات جهادية. ويروي الواقع باستخدام أدوات السرد الرقمي، قصص أربعة سجناء اعتنقوا الفكر الجهادي، ونفّذ بعضهم عمليات إرهابية...

أريج تدين اغتيال الصحفيين العراقيين عبد الصمد وغالي

أدانت شبكة (أريج) اغتيال الصحفي الاستقصائي العراقي أحمد عبد الصمد ورفيقه المصور صفاء غالي، برصاص مجهولين أثناء تغطية الاحتجاجات الشعبية في البصرة.

وتستذكر الشبكة خصال الفقيد عبد الصمد وبدايات نشاطه في صحافة الاستقصاء إلى جانب العشرات من الصحفيين العراقيين. وكان عبد الصمد أنجز تحقيقا استقصائيا في آذار/ مارس 2012 بعنوان: “طريق الموت بين أم قصر والبصرة“...

الواقع: أدوات السرد الرقمي مكمّلة للقصة الاستقصائية وليست "بروازا" لعرض القصّة

في هذا العدد من النشرة الشهرية، نستضيف الصحفي المصري محمود الواقع، الذي نال جائزة صحافة المستقبل. تخرج الواقع في كلية الإعلام بجامعة القاهرة تخصص صحافة. وخلال فترة بسيطة استطاع أن يتنقل بين مؤسسات إعلام مصرية عدّة، بدءا من جريدة "المصري اليوم"، فضائية "أون تي في" وصولا إلى "القاهرة والناس".

التحق الواقع بعدة ورشات تدريب أريجية على مدى أربعة أعوام، وأنتج تحقيقات حول قضايا "حقوق الإنسان" و"الفساد"، كان آخرها تحقيق "صنع في السجن".
